To celebrate Earth Day, we are #WildAtHeart, collectively working to solve the most urgent challenges facing wild cats. Join us as we highlight the importance of investing in our planet and wild cats to pave a path toward a cleaner Earth and a more resilient future. When we invest in wild cats, we also invest in their habitats, the thousands of species with whom they coexist and the human communities they live alongside.
Florence the Lion
Tiny cub pawprints again dot the soil in Senegal's Niokolo-Koba National Park thanks to Florence, a 10-year-old lioness deemed to be the Park’s matriarch. Florence was the first-ever lion to be fitted with a GPS collar in Senegal in 2021, and in her lifetime, she has bred at least nine cubs — increasing the park's lion population by one-third. In turn, ecotourism is rebounding, bringing much-needed funding and jobs to this region.
F11-9
F11-9, named for her first sighting in 2011, is an essential member of one of the world’s best-known jaguar populations in Belize’s Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. Panthera camera traps have spotted her more than 200 times — contributing vital data about female jaguars, which are detected only half as frequently as males.
Nolan the Puma
Nolan has strengthened scientists’ understanding of puma migration habits in Washington State and beyond. This cat soon became known as Nolan the “island-hopping cougar,” the inspiration for a recent scientific publication. Alongside researchers from the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe and Skokomish Tribe Natural Resources, we set out to determine the accessibility of the 6,153 islands in the Salish Sea to cougars. Since Nolan swam 1.1 km and other cougars have swum to islands almost 2 km from the mainland, we determined that 3,808 islands could be accessible to pumas.
