We Are Vanishing

We are Vanishing
Lions — the planet’s ultimate biodiversity guardians — are vanishing. A century ago, 100,000 roamed Africa and today fewer than 24,000 remain.

Who We Are

Founded in 2006, Panthera is devoted to the conservation of the world’s 40 species of wild cats and the vast ecosystems they inhabit. Our team of biologists, data scientists, law enforcement experts and wild cat advocates studies and protects the seven species of big cats: cheetahs, jaguars, leopards, lions, pumas, snow leopards and tigers. Panthera also creates targeted conservation strategies for the world’s most threatened and overlooked small cats.

With our supporters around the world, we inform the public about the plight of wild cats, work with local communities to live in harmony with wild cats, protect wild cats and their prey from poaching, fight the illegal wildlife trade and safeguard the precious landscapes wild cats need to survive.

Where We Work

Across the globe, Panthera works to protect the world’s most critical “catscapes” — habitats home to multiple species of cats. Our leading wild cat biologists and dedicated staff members are relying on the latest science to design and implement proven conservation strategies. We work hand-in-paw with our partners in 34 countries, from the United States’s Pacific Northwest to Malaysia’s Deramakot Forest Complex, to impact lasting change for wild cats.

Why Cats?

As apex predators, wild cats shape the vast landscapes they inhabit. When we protect wild cats, we're helping to preserve the intricate food web and ecological relationships on which all life in that landscape depends—from butterflies to elephants, and indeed, people, too.

Panthera’s Story

Although wild cats range over more than a third of our planet, few of us will ever have the experience of seeing them in the wild. You can get closer to wild cats right now with this stunning four-minute video narrated by Academy Award-winning actor Jeremy Irons — who voiced Scar in Disney's 1994 film, The Lion King. In this film, he perfectly captures the majesty of big cats, the urgent threats they face, and how Panthera is working to save them.
