With Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King now in U.S. theaters, Panthera is proud to support Disney and our partner The Wildlife Conservation Network’s Lion Recovery Fund again for their #ProtectThePride campaign, which aims to help double to number of lions across Africa.

This means that lions are once again taking center stage, captivating audiences just as they have for centuries. But how much do we really know about these iconic big cats? Let’s break down some common myths and reveal some fascinating facts about one of the world's largest wild cat species:

Myth: "Lions are the King of the Jungle"

While lions are often called the “King of the Jungle,” they are not actually found in jungles! Lions roam grasslands and savannahs, where their golden coats provide excellent camouflage while hunting prey like antelopes and zebras.

Myth: "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"

Not quite! Lions are nocturnal hunters, which means they’re most active at night when it’s cooler and they use the cover of darkness to their advantage. So, while visitors to Africa’s national parks often see lions napping in the shade of a tree during the day, nighttime is when the real action begins!

Myth: "Male Lions do all the Hunting"

In fact, both males and females are active hunters working together to bring down prey. Male lions, however, play a critical role in defending the pride and its territory against other males.

Myth: "Lions Roar when they Hunt"

Lions roar to communicate with each other. Their roars can sometimes be heard more than five miles away, signaling their presence to rivals and keeping their pride united. Lions are usually silent when they hunt so they can sneak up on prey!

Panthera’s Vision to Protect Lions

Lions are one of Africa’s most iconic species, standing at the top of the food chain and second in size only to tigers among the big cats. Their presence is vital to maintaining healthy ecosystems, and protecting lions also safeguards the landscapes and resources that countless communities depend on.

At Panthera, we’re committed to ensuring a future for lions in the wild by securing and protecting lion populations in regionally significant landscapes

As we celebrate lions in popular culture, it’s vital to remember the challenges they face in the wild—habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and declining populations. As the year comes to a close, let’s work together to protect wild cat habitats. Through December 31, every donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar, doubling your impact for wild cats like lions and the landscapes they call home. For these cats, home is where the habitat is.

Partnership is Key to Lion Conservation Success

In 2017, Panthera and the Lion Recovery Fund (LRF) forged a partnership to protect lions and their habitats. Across Africa, we are implementing innovative and comprehensive solutions in areas where safety and survival of lion populations is most critical. We are collaborating across borders and across organizations to safeguard breeding populations in key areas, including carefully planned future translocations.

Together, Panthera and LRF are working to secure a future for lions and the ecosystems they call home.

Protect the Pride! To celebrate Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King, Panthera is helping the Wildlife Conservation Network’s Lion Recovery Fund to restore lion populations and supporting efforts that engage communities to ensure a future for African wildlife and their habitats. Follow Panthera, Disney's The Lion King, Disney Conservation Fund, and the Lion Recovery Fund on social media to stay up to date on the #Mufasa #ProtectThePride campaign and share info with your friends and family about how they can help Protect the Pride.
